The Cancer Association of Zimbabwe (CAZ) on Thursday conducted free cervical and breast cancer screening for 100 women at Ruvimbo Polyclinic in Mbizo, Kwekwe, as part of its ongoing nationwide awareness and prevention programme.
CAZ Health Services Manager Naomi Badza said the initiative, sponsored by Pick n Pay and CAPS, seeks to encourage early detection of cancer among women.
“We are here today at Ruvimbo Polyclinic in Kwekwe, where we are doing cervical cancer and breast cancer screening for free. Yesterday we were in Gweru and the response has been overwhelming,” she said.
Badza noted that both cervical and breast cancer are among the most common cancers in Zimbabwe, but can be treated successfully if detected early.
“The turnout has shown us that women are becoming more aware of the importance of being screened,” she added.
The programme has already been rolled out in Harare, Bulawayo and Gweru, and is set to move to Manicaland Province, with screenings scheduled for Mutare and Rusape on September 2. Other provinces are also expected to benefit in the coming weeks.
Badza expressed gratitude to the corporate sponsors for making the programme possible, saying their support had enabled more women to access lifesaving screening services.
