Kwekwe Mayor Councillor Albert Zinhanga says the city has no plans to evict vendors from their current operating sites, dismissing reports that informal traders would be removed by September 15.
Addressing a press briefing on Monday, Zinhanga said all vendors operating under Kwekwe City Council jurisdiction should continue their activities at existing locations until designated alternative sites are provided.
“We are not chasing any vendors — that’s number one. All the vendors who are operating where they are operating, under the City of Kwekwe, should continue operating there until we have given them a new space,” Zinhanga said.
The mayor emphasised that the council has not created any new vending sites and warned traders to be cautious of misinformation. He added that private individuals claiming to offer vending spaces were acting independently and not on behalf of the municipality.
He also urged vendors to ensure they receive official receipts for any payments made to council, saying only a receipt authorises them to operate legally.
“We are not responsible for anyone who pays money to a city council official and does not get a receipt,” Zinhanga said.
Zinhanga said official council communications would continue to be issued through established channels and encouraged the public to verify any information on vending arrangements directly with the municipality.
