Mbizo 2 house gutted by mysterious fire

A house in Kwekwe’s Mbizo 2 suburb was gutted by fire under unclear circumstances, destroying property worth hundreds of dollars.

City of Kwekwe councillor for the area, Cllr Maxwell Judha, who visited the scene, told 98.4 FM News that the cause of the fire had not yet been established.

He said by the time the Kwekwe Fire Brigade arrived, most of the household property had already been destroyed.

“I visited the house and spoke to the male tenant who resides there. I observed that the house is not electrified,” said Cllr Judha. “The tenant told me that he does not smoke or drink alcohol and that he arrived home around midnight and went straight to bed. I also noted that there was a gas tank in the kitchen, which was intact.”

However, the owner of the house, Fanuel Masiiwa, expressed doubts over the explanation given by his younger brother Milton, who stays at the house.

“I suspect that my brother is not being truthful about what caused the fire,” said Masiiwa. “He might have gone to the bar and either left the gas tank on or a candle lit.”

Masiiwa said all household property was destroyed in the inferno, except for a kitchen unit.

Authorities have not yet released an official determination on the cause of the fire.
